Los Angeles: A Dark and Twisted Dream

by capreviewroom

Bright Shiny Morning is a book by #1 national bestseller James Frey. Frey is originally from Cleveland and now resides in New York. He is the author of “A Million Little Pieces” and “My Friend Leonard”. “Bright Shiny Morning” is set in downtown Los Angeles, this gripping novel shows the brutal reality to the dream of heading to Los Angeles to become a star. “A captivating urban kaleidoscope….Frey stepped up to the plate and hit one out of the park .” -The New York Times

“Bright Shiny Morning” is a collection of stories and a brief history of Los Angeles all in one bold original package. Frey’s stories range from simply twisted to oddly beautiful all while sending the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. A forbidden love affair, a struggling couple escaping abuse, or an actor with a secret and an augmented sense of reality. No matter what the story Frey told it with an honesty that is rarely seen in this world.

This book highlights the human condition to want to become famous, rich, and powerful all by moving to the land where stars are made. Whether you look for escape or fame Frey shows you its never as easy to achieve your dreams in the place where so many dreams go to die every year.

Now I usually don’t enjoy short stories, but this one was different than any I have ever read. You cannot help but get sucked into each story whether its Old Man Joe a bum struggling to get by or Amberton a movie star millionaire with a devious sense of truth and honesty.

In short, this is a phenomenal book that I could not put down. Frey keeps you guessing at every turn while letting you think you have it all figured out. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars it is definitely worth the read.
