In the Skin of a Lion written by Michael Ondaatje is a novel set in 19th century Toronto. This novel is constructed of few short stories which makes it a whole. Ondaatje takes his readers into the life style of immigrant workers who deal with conflicts about love and society. The element that got me so interested in this novel was the views belonging to the characters’ about the love relationship between one other.

In the Skin of a Lion expresses the foundation of romance and love through a few different characters. Alice Gull, Clara Dickens, Ambrose Small and Patrick share these profound expressions of feelings that connect them together. Patrick, the main character, has a different outlook of love; he uses it to fulfill his needs in such ways to satisfy his standards while working in the darkness of dynamiter. In the beginning of the novel, Patrick falls madly in love with Clara Dickens and wants to be in a relationship with her. Unfortunately, Clara was more interested in Ambrose Small and was on a search for him. She tells Patrick she is leaving him to go after Small and warns him not to follow her. Alice, a friend of Clara, shows Patrick affection and helps him search for the lady he loved. With a broken heart, Patrick does not give up and heads after Clara. With the aid of Clara’s mother, he manages to find where Small and Clara where living. After the entire struggle that Patrick goes through, he is hit with an unexpected surprise in the hotel he is staying at. Clara decides to visit Patrick and makes love to him before returning to Small. Patrick is left with a lost soul, but his passion for love is not over. Alice Gull takes the place of Clara in Patrick’s heart. Watching Alice’s hand getting repeatedly smashed against the stage, Patrick takes matters in his own hands and helps her out before realizing it was part of the show that she is in. He then begins to communicate with Alice and gets to know more about her. “They would sit side by side in a Chinese restaurant, empty but for the two of them. Wanting to face each other but wanting to hold each other and having to decide on one pleasure. The intricate choices of desire “(Ondaatje 159-160) .They soon become lovers. Alice is then introduced to a new character; she was no longer a nun and lives the life that fulfilled her needs before she dies in Patrick’s arms.

  1. You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation however I find this
topic to be actually one thing that I believe I would never understand.

It seems too complicated and very extensive for me. I’m looking forward to your next submit, I will try to get the dangle of it!
